Our Beliefs

March 2011 Newsletter

Do your beliefs empower you or limit you? Our beliefs can be our most powerful asset or our worst enemy. There are certain beliefs that can paralyze us and restrict our potential for greatness. These limiting beliefs can hamper our ability to learn, grow and change.

Imagine if you awake tomorrow and discover that something you have believed and accepted as fact, simply wasn't? How would you feel? Angry? Confused? Could it be that many of us hold on to certain beliefs in order to avoid the above feelings? Just imagine if you have to unlearn something you've believed for decades? That would be very challenging both mentally and emotionally, wouldn't it?

  • Is it possible that you've learned certain things over the years that are, in fact, false?

  • Is it possible that some of your limiting beliefs are the very things that stop you from fulfilling or at least, exploring your potential, making certain decisions, taking chances and possibly finding happiness?

  • Did you consciously choose and develop your own beliefs or did you simply adopt beliefs that were handed down to you?

  • Is it possible that you’ve believed certain things for so long that the very thought of questioning some of your long-held beliefs makes you feel uncomfortable, anxious, disloyal, or perhaps even overwhelmed.

  • Have you ever felt like questioning certain beliefs but held back in order to keep the peace and avoid potential confrontation?

One of the most liberating, empowering, and cathartic things we can do to enable growth and triumph in our own lives is to question our beliefs. This is not about being rebellious or creating controversy but about learning who we are and what we really believe beyond what we are taught to accept as the norm by society, religion, or family.

It is important to understand that our beliefs to a greater extent determine our choices and actions as well as the kind of results we produce in our world. Sometimes, it is necessary to question what we believe to redefine our values so we can see more clearly and achieve the fulfilling life we desire. Here are some ways you can begin to move beyond your limiting beliefs.

  • Be open to change, it can be a window of opportunity.
  • Be open to letting go of old ideas and embracing new ones no matter how different they are from your current beliefs.
  • Go into situations with a flexible, open mind.
  • Follow new ideas or opportunities where they lead you, not where you want it to go.
  • Look for the positive aspects to every situation that are presented to you by asking, "Why has this situation been presented to me?"

"Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny." - Mahatma Gadhi
