Blood Sugar Levels
Our blood sugar level is literally the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. The sugar in our bodies comes from our diet. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that is released to break down the sugars and starches we consume into energy. If our blood sugar falls too low (hypoglycemia) we can feel light-headed, faint, or lethargic. Blood glucose levels can build up to cause diabetes when not enough insulin is produced.
There is no known cause for diabetes however there is a lot of information available on prevention. There are two types of diabetes - type 1 and type 2. Type l diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes is usually seen in children, and occurs when the body just doesn't produce insulin. In this case insulin has to be put into the body. Type 2 diabetes is the most common and comes on in adulthood. This is condition caused by a malfunction in the way the body uses its insulin and a insulin deficiency.
Having diabetes increases your risk for other serious complications. With diabetes you may be at risk for heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage. You can obtain more information from the American Diabetes Association website.
As a life coach I encourage a complete physical. There are certain safe limits to maintain a normal blood glucose level. In a routine physical, your physician may recommend a blood glucose test. This is a simple blood test or a prick of the finger.

National Institute of Health,
the following are the ranges:
Levels up to 100 mg/dL are considered normal.
Levels between 100 and 126 mg/dl are considered impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes and puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes and its complications.
Levels higher than 126 mg/dl is typically diagnosed as diabetes.
Having the knowledge of your blood sugar levels can allow you to take the necessary precautions to maintain normal levels, especially if diabetes runs in your family.
If you are diagnosed with diabetes, understanding diabetic diets and educating yourself about the illness is the key to getting it under control. Your physician may also recommend medications to keeping it under control.
