Achieve Your Personal Best
What Does It Mean?
Michelle, a 17 year old, straight A student watched as her parents disappointedly read her most recent report card, all C's and D's. There was nothing unusual in her life, no illness, nothing had changed. She knew she had fallen below what she was potentially capable of but vigorously defended her position while repeating "I did the best I could." Did she?
Sam the father and husband always dreamed of starting his own business. He maintained his full-time job while planning and strategizing his business plans any spare moment he could find. He suddenly made the decision to quit his job that financially sustained his home and family and decided to put all his efforts into his new venture. Without enough start-up capital and the positive response he expected from potential clients, before long, he found himself in a financial predicament. His defense was "I gave it my best but I don't know what went wrong." Did he?
We all want to do our best and achieve our personal best. But what does that really mean? No one deliberately makes bad decisions. We only make them based on the limited scope of our knowledge and thinking. "Doing your best" or "achieving your personal best" means doing everything possible to make the best choice every step of the way. It means:
Knowing your limitations and when to seek outside help in making a good choices.
Knowing your strengths yet realizing that you don't know it all and that your choices are based on your limited experiences, so getting objective input can move you to a higher level of success.
Putting ego aside and not becoming over confident when making choices.
Having the ability to take advice from someone who has a reputation for making sound judgment.
Not allowing your emotions to cloud your judgment.
Avoid impulsive decisions.
Follow the examples of the clues left behind by successful people.

Thinking Your Personal Best
Michelle obviously knew how to study and maintain good grades. However, she allowed something in her life to distract her from staying focused on her school work. At 17, and most likely a junior or senior in high school, this is a critical year in terms of grades. Allowing her grades to fall at such a critical time shows lack of focus. This is far from doing her best.
Sam is obviously ambitious and motivated – 2 great qualities for success. Starting a business requires start-up capital to get it off the ground. This start-up capital is used for materials and supplies, professional and legal expenses as well the cost of product research and development. Because Sam quit his job without enough start-up capital, whatever resources he had was spent maintaining the home and family expenses, leaving a meager amount for investment into the business. Sam needed to get some outside input to create a business plan for allocating his funds and getting a realistic view of his business venture. When the money ran out, the family suffered as well as the business. His level of thinking did not allow him to produce the best results.
To achieve your personal best means thinking in a way that produces the best results every time. It means:
