A Role Model for your Children is Who You Are.

When you decide to become a parent, your position also becomes that of role model, mentor, guide, listener, guide, and teacher. The life you lived before you became a parent changes to one of exemplary living for your child. You must be willing and ready to discard old, destructive habits and strive to be a better person for your children.

No one ever said parenting is easy. However, the love and joy our children bring to our lives is the compensation and reward we receive for the challenges we face when parenting. That is why it's important to seek the help of someone who can guide you through those tough moments.

Your children spend most of their time with you. They intently observe, absorbing and mimicking everything you do. Your language and expressions become their language and expressions. Your habits become their habits. Your behavior becomes their behavior.

Parents generally have high expectations for their children. Demands are placed on them to adhere to certain values or principles or abstain from certain behaviors. However, these same behaviors or values may not necessarily be practiced by the parent. You must live the life you want your children to live. You must practice what you preach!

  • If you want your child to practice good citizenship, then you must practice good citizenship.

  • If you want your child to be considerate of others, then you must be considerate of others.

  • If you want you child to be kind, you must be kind.

  • If you want you child to take her education seriously, you must take her education seriously.

  • If you want your child to avoid alcohol and cigarettes, you must abstain from alcohol and cigarettes.

  • If you want your child to be peace makers, you must not be conflictive or contentious.

  • If you want you child to be ambitious, you must be ambitious.

  • If you want your child to be balanced in their lifestyle choices, you must be balanced in your lifestyle.

    Strategies for being a better Role Model for your Child.

  • Share with your children your personal values and morals.

  • Maintain your self-respect always.

  • Read books and available literature on good parenting and how to be a better example for your child.

  • Work to improve your life and strive to be your best.

  • Live the life you want your child to live. The best form is leadership is by example.

  • Be open to constructive advice and don'’t be so quick to jump on the defensive.

  • Examine your behavior. Look to see the areas in which you can make some changes. Try to be objective for your children's sake.

  • When you make mistakes, speak to your child about it and apologize. Let them see the human side of you - we all make mistakes.

  • Be selective with your friends. If your child is exposed to your friends, remember they are observing your friends' actions and behaviors. Show them how to have healthy friends by being selective with your friends.

  • Seek parenting education classes.

  • Solicit the help of a parenting coach. This can help you to make advances much faster.

    Encourage other people to serve as a healthy role model in your children's life. It can be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, teacher, or a friend. Allowing healthy role models in your children’s life can only improve their lives.

    Many children look up to celebrities and sports figures as their role models. Sometimes these people are not necessarily the type of examples we want for our children. Remember, if your children have healthy role models in their lives, there would be little need to seek out not so healthy role models.

    Use this parenting information to examine your role in your children's life. Don't feel bad if there are things you need to improve on. We are all just trying to do the best we can as parents. However, now that you are informed, you should try to do better and become the best example for your children.
