Many parents confuse spirituality with religion. They assume that one has to be religious in order to be spiritual. For this parent who opposes religion, the child may lose out on making a spiritual connection. Some people chose religion as their method of filling their spiritual hunger. This is only one way of doing so.

We are spiritual beings not religious beings. We are designed as human beings to have a spiritual hunger just like we have a physical hunger for food. By allowing your minds to accept this notion, you will be able to recognize many other ways to fill that spiritual need for you and your children. See the section on how to develop your spirituality. The spiritual growth of your child depends on you the parent. You must first establish your personal spiritual convictions in order to impart lessons in spirituality to your child.

A life of spiritual growth gives your children the grounding they need to handle the pressures and challenges they will face as they grow older. Let's face it, our children worry! When they are spiritually perceptive, they learn other ways of coping with their worries and concerns. They learn to rely on a greater power, which brings a feeling of companionship and gives them peace within.

Here are some ways your child can benefit from encouraging their spiritual growth.

  • Helps them to overcome peer pressure.

  • Helps them to resist the temptation of drugs and alcohol.

  • Teaches them to be kind and unselfish and to learn lessons in sharing.

  • Teaches compassion and consideration for others.

  • Helps them to understand values such as honor, honesty, and trust.

  • Instills powerful concepts of the power of faith and prayer.

  • Teaches your children how to be thankful and grateful for the things in their lives.

  • Teaches them overall good citizenship.

  • Gives them a sense of centeredness and balance in their lives.

  • Gives a sense of calm and peace.

  • They learn contentment a huge step towards happiness.

  • Teaches your child how to accept responsibility for their actions and behaviors.

  • A great way to build your child's character.

  • A spirituality connected child is a balanced, happy child. You are doing a grave injustice to your child by not instilling spiritual values in your child. When negative influences arise or a crisis occurs in your children's life, do they know how to cope?

If you do not guide your children during their formative years, the years will disappear and then it will be too late. Then when your children behave in ways you cannot understand you have no one else to blame but you the parent. Your child is innocent in all of this. It is your job to enable spiritual growth for your children.

    Ways to Encourage Spiritual Growth

  • From age one, begin by reading inspirational books of courage, honor, and faith. You can do it at bedtime or as a family ritual. Find a book you can read as a family and gather your family together for some spiritual bonding. Discuss what you read to reinforce the concepts to your children. Allow you children time to talk openly about their feelings.

  • Teach you children about a higher power that governs the universe and nature. Teach them that we are all part of nature and the universe. That we must stay connected with that higher power to perform at our best. If you believe in God, teach your child about God.

  • In many churches there are children programs and activities that instill wonderful values to children. The emphasis is on spirituality and not religion. When my daughter was a little girl, I got her involved in many church run children activities. The doctrines of the religion are not necessarily preached at this stage. The focus is placed on all the spiritual values.

  • Let your child see you the parent filling your spiritual need.

  • Listen to uplifting, inspirational music in your home and car.

  • Give of your time to others in service to them. Show acts of kindness to help those less fortunate.

Fostering spiritual growth in your children doesn't mean you have to become fanatical about it. Everything in moderation is better received and assimilated.
